Tong Hing supermarket needs little introduction – opening its doors in 1959, it is one of the oldest establishments in Kota Kinabalu, pioneering the retail and wholesale of imported fine foods. But there’s something new in KK’s ‘something old’: Introducing Cafe on Fifty5, an elegant Italian cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in style.
The cafe focuses on fresh and healthily-prepared meals. Start with the pizza menu and try their thin-crust Hawaiian Pizza – a delicious combination of pineapple, turkey ham, tomatoes and mozzarella. While cheese powder is often sprinkled, Cafe on Fifty5 recommends that you reach out for the chilli flakes for a change. The spicy kick gives the pizza an unexpected twist!
The Cafe also prides itself in making their own pasta and sauces, using only the freshest ingredients. Take for ecample the Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare, a mouth-watering seafood combination using fresh mussels, shrimp and calamari in homemade tomato sauce. If you like your pasta creamy and rich, their Spaghetti Carbonara will leave you wanting more. Other must-try mains include the Pan-fried Chilled Norwegian Salmon and Braised Lamb Shank, both served with buttery mashed Idaho potatoes, with its own homemade brown and herb sauces.
For dessert, the Classic Italian Tiramisu stole our hearts as did the Pancake with Movenpick Ice Cream. You can also end the meal with a caffeine kick from their selection of coffee and tea, or refresh with a glass of juice.
You might spot an unusual stand-out from the menu: traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice. Locals who grew up dining in Wishbone located at Hotel Jesselton will remember this signature dish and can delight in the fact that Chef Peter (originally from Wishbone) has now joined Cafe Fifty5 to bring you this much-loved classic, prepared the way you remember it. Head over to Cafe Fifty5, for a taste of something old and plenty new.
