Over the last few years, the city of Sandakan has caught the ‘cafe wave’, with a variety of cafes opening up throughout the city. With its cosy ambience, modern decor and friendly staff, Urban Cafe has made quite an impression on caffeine-hunters here.
Coffee and cakes are their specialty, the latter made daily to ensure quality and freshness. As a tribute for their love of travel, cakes are named after cities: Manila (Mango), Taipei (Pineapple), Sandakan (Jackfruit) and Jakarta (Oreo and banana) among others. For a healthier option, diners can order the Jakarta, Avocado Slice or Mango Slice – all made without egg, butter or flour. Want a local twist? Try the Jackfruit flavoured cake.
To complement their delicious cakes, a cuppa is needed. While they started off with imported beans from Singapore, the cafe also features beans of single origin from Johor Bahru and Kenya. Urban Cafe serves 100% Arabica Coffee and the cafe uses local honey for all coffee and tea instead of sugar (however, brown sugar is available upon request).
Freshly-baked cookies are provided for free when you stay for drink and if you can’t get enough, cookies can be purchased by weight. In their bid to staying ‘green’, customers get RM1 off the bill when they bring in their own tumblers or food containers. For a relaxing cafe experience in Sandakan, go Urban!
