EASTERN SABAH SECURITY COMMAND (ESSCOM)
The safety and security of all visitors remain a top priority for Malaysia. The Malaysian government has implemented strict security measures nationwide, particularly in areas popular with tourists. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed, exercise standard safety precautions, and remain vigilant throughout their stay.
In Sabah, the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) ensures security in the eastern coastal areas, including the Sulu Sea region. While Sabah remains a vibrant and welcoming destination, we urge visitors to follow safety guidelines, use licensed tour operators, respect local customs, and stay informed through official ESSCOM updates. By doing so, you can fully immerse yourself in Sabah’s breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and thrilling adventures with confidence.
We are pleased to note that a few countries have lowered their travel advisory levels for parts of Eastern Sabah, reflecting ongoing improvements in security.
In December 2024, Japan relaxed its travel advisory for Sabah’s east coast, allowing Japanese citizens to visit Tawau, Sandakan, and Lahad Datu, while maintaining restrictions on travel to the islands off Semporna. This partial relaxation followed the Japanese government’s decision to lower the danger level for these mainland areas to Level 2.
Updates as of 8 August 2025:
Australia has lowered its travel advice for the mainland shoreline in the Eastern of Sabah, from Level 3 to Level 2.
This positive development emphasises the effectiveness of ESSCOM’s continued efforts to safeguard the area. Visitors are still encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, travel with reputable operators, and follow any advisories issued by local authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
