Located less than an hour from Tawau town is one of nature’s geological masterpieces, the columnar basalt at Balung Cocos village. The columnar basalt is a rare geological formation that occurs when the thick basalt lava cools and contracts millions of years ago, creating towering hexagonal columns.

The columnar basalt at Balung Cocos village is the only one found in Malaysia. The area is surrounded by lush greenery and exudes a serene and mystical atmosphere, perfect for photography, exploration, and quiet appreciation of nature’s artistry.

The journey to the attraction takes you through scenic countryside roads, passing plantations and forests before reaching the site. The destination is easily accessible via online navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze. While the location remains relatively undisturbed, it’s advisable to travel with a travel guide who can help navigate the route. Although a staircase is provided to see the columnar basalt, wearing comfortable shoes is recommended as the terrain can be uneven.
