Maliau Basin secludedness, other-worldly pristineness, and untouched tropical forest have regarded it as the ‘Lost World’ . The dense forest has still until today remain not fully explored. The area represents an important water catchment area draining towards Maliau River. Upon aerial view, Maliau Basin stands out because of its unique geographical saucer-shaped crater. The rainforest contains one of the most diverse and complex biodiversity with a high number of waterfalls.
The Maliau Basin Studies Centre functioned as the centre for research, conservation, education and ecotourism purposes. Nature explorers will simply love the Maliau Basin, as it is an excellent site for jungle trekking and bird watching. It is home to an unusual assemblage of 12 forest types, comprising mainly lower montane forests dominated by majestic Agathis trees, rare montane heath forests, lowland forests, and hill dipterocarp forests. The highlight of the adventure is to trek the majestic 7-tier Maliau Falls. At night, visitors may also take the night drive for wildlife spotting from the study centre. Pygmy elephants, orang utan, leopard cat, sun bear, civets and gibbons aresome of the spotted wildlife in Maliau Basin.
Bear in mind that Maliau Basin is in a remote, protected and isolated area with limited access, communications, and facilities. Visitors must obtain permission in advance to enter the Maliau Basin from the Conservation and Environmental Management Division of Yayasan Sabah. It is highly recommended to have this tour prearranged with the operator or from any licensed tour company. There are multiple packages available ranging from Studies Centre Packages, Trekking and Special Interest Packages. Trekking expedition is usually packaged for 4 days 3 nights or 5 days 4 nights with physical requirements, and categorized from medium to strenuous activity.
