Day 1: Kota Kinabalu to Sapulot

As early as 8 AM, a private transportation from Borneo Outback Tours will pick you up at your hotel in Kota Kinabalu and your journey to the meeting point at Green Restaurant, Sapulot will take approximately 4 hours.  As you arrive at the Green Restaurant, your transportation will be switched to a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The next 45 minutes would take you over some rough terrain to reach the jetty of Kg. Labang.

Upon arrival, a 15-minute traditional longboat ride brings you to Pungiton Eco-Camp, your home for the night.

Afternoon:

After lunch, embark on a short trek through Sapulot’s jungle to explore the Pungiton Cave. This multi-level cave, home to bats, offers an unforgettable adventure. It is recommended to wear trekking shoes, comfortable clothing, and bring a reliable torchlight to navigate the dark interior. Over two hours, you’ll explore four of the cave’s seven levels.

Evening:

Return to camp for a well-deserved dinner. At Pungiton Eco-Camp, you’ll experience authentic longhouse living, complete with basic amenities in a serene, open-air setting.

Facilities at Pungiton Eco-Camp:

Day 2: Pungiton Eco-Camp to Batu Punggul & Kabulongou Village

Morning:

At 6.30 AM, enjoy breakfast before embarking on a 30-minute river cruise to the base of Batu Punggul, an 800-foot limestone pinnacle. Upon arrival, a 30-minutes hike leads to the climbing point, where you’ll have the option to scale Batu Punggul.

Climbing Batu Punggul requires strong mental and physical strength as the climb relies entirely on your grip and footing. The sharp limestone edges provide minimal footholds, so rock climbing shoes or rubber “Adidas Kampung” (RM12) are highly recommended, along with gloves for hand protection. The ascent to the top takes about 30 minutes.

Afternoon:

After ending your climb at Batu Punggul, you will have a picnic lunch by the riverbanks. At 1 PM, you will be transferred to the Kabulongou Eco-Camp near Pagalungan, followed by a 40-minute hike to the camp. Along the way, participate in a forest rehabilitation program by planting trees.

Evening:

As the dinner is being prepared, soak yourselves with a rejuvenating dip in the nearby waterfall. Enjoy a hearty meal before settling into your tent, equipped with a mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow.

Facilities available at Kabulongou Eco-Camp:

  • Toilet and shower rooms with shampoo and body wash
  • Tents with comfortable mattress, sleeping bag and pillow
  • Wi-Fi access
  • Power supply (available in the common area only)

Day 3: Kabulongou Eco-Camp to Kalimantan Border & MunorAulai Guesthouse

Morning – Afternoon:

Begin your day with breakfast at 6.30 AM, followed by a trek through trails developed by the local villagers. Explore the 1,000-acre rainforest teeming with wildlife. Keep an eye out for red-leaf monkeys, the elusive clouded leopard, or even a sun bear. After trekking for two hours, return to camp, pack up, and prepare for your next adventure to the Kalimantan border.

At 9 AM, embark on a journey to Kg. Salung Jetty for a scenic downstream ride in a traditional longboat along the Logongon River. You’ll see the last frontier of the Murut community with longhouses in various villages located along both sides of the Logongon river. After an hour boat ride, you will arrive at the Kalimantan border, marked by the CIQS (Customs, Immigration, Quarantine, and Security) complex. While you can’t cross the border further, you will find a tranquil riverbank spot to enjoy a packed lunch.

Witness the rich cultural heritage of the community up close.

  • Rooms with single or queen size beds covered with mosquito net.

Day 4: MunorAulai Integrated Farm

Morning:

At 7.30 AM, start your day with a briefing by a Borneo Outback Tours staff member on the MunorAulai Integrated Farm, a two-hectare model farm designed to help the Nabawan villagers optimize small plots for sustainable income. Participate in hands-on activities like cocoa grafting and harvesting before enjoying a hearty farm-fresh lunch.

Afternoon:

After lunch, a demonstration on tapai making (rice wine) will be done by the villagers. At 3 PM, try your hand at fishing in the farm’s fish pond, followed by a cooking class led by one of the local cooks to prepare dinner.

The journey takes about 45 minutes, combining paved and gravel roads, followed by a short 5-minute hike to the campsite. Here, you’ll find basic essential amenities such as huts, toilet, shower room, and a kitchen. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the waterfall and a hearty lunch in the serene setting.
